In an unprecedented move, Hersheypark has closed due to the weather.
Park officials announced Monday morning the park and ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park will not be in operation July 23, as a result of excessive rainfall over the past three days with localized flooding.
A post on the park’s Facebook page read:
Unfortunately, due to the excessive rainfall over the past three days and localized flooding, Hersheypark and ZooAmerica will be closed Monday, July 23 for the safety of our employees and guests. Any additional changes to operating schedules will be provided here when available.
The park experienced major flooding in 2014 near its entranceway. In 2011, officials had to shoot two bison after they were drowning in floodwaters at ZooAmerica as the result of high waters from Tropical Storm Lee.
“The last time the park closed (not due to snow) was September 10-11, 2011,” said spokeswoman Kaylee Dugan of Hershey Entertainment.
Obviously, the closure reroutes many out-of-town guests who were planning visits to the park early this week.
