On Tuesday 4th of July, 2017 the North Korean leadership launched what it claimed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile, against all advice from top states in the world.
Kim Jong-Un has come out to say this is a gift to the US. This is an interesting development and a serious show of force by North Korea, the US has been against it getting such an advanced missile and now getting it the first country they have something to say to is the United States.
This simply means the North Korean leadership absolutely do not care how the US feels about this missile launch and have gone out of their way to make sure this message is passed. This is the first case in the modern international system, where a state is outrightly saying ‘we do not care’ to the United States. While many scholars may view this as a dangerous move, I see it as a move in the right direction.
Not supporting the use of nuclear weapons, but the fact that the North Korean government has been able to get this missile serves as a deterrent for an attack from the US.
Then it is safe to say North Korea is a truly sovereign and independent state one of the very few ones in the world.
